How Do Leap Years Work?

A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4 — except for century years (like 1900), which must be divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not. Leap years have 366 days, with February having 29 days instead of 28.

Why Do We Have Leap Years?

The Earth takes approximately 365.25 days to orbit the sun. Without leap years, our calendar would slowly drift out of sync with the seasons — losing about 6 hours per year. By adding a day every 4 years, we keep the calendar aligned.
